How to Persevere When You Just Want to Crawl Back Under the Covers

coaching leadership perseverance resilience Nov 16, 2016

Sometimes life throws you curveballs. Sometimes it feels like there's a pitching machine throwing at you and it won't stop.

One of my friends lost a parent and an uncle in the space of a month.

Another person, a highly qualified client of mine in the technology industry, was put on a team where she is the only female colleague and her teammates openly discussed their conviction that she only got the job to fulfill a quota.

A friend of mine expressed his frustration that he does great in phone screen interviews, but when he goes to in-person interviews, he can see the enthusiasm drain away when meeting with people 20 years younger than he is.

"When you're going through hell, keep going." -Winston Churchill

No getting around it, this human being thing can be a tough gig.

Here are some tips on how to keep going when you'd rather crawl under the covers and watch Netflix all day:

1. Lean on your friends and supporters.
I don't know about you, but when I get knocked down, I often want to hole up by myself and not bring others down. It's as though there's something wrong with being sad or deflated.

Resist that faulty thinking.

Reach out and seek the company of your supporters. Let your peeps buoy you up. Let them tell you how great you are. Take it in. Revel in the honor and joy of having true friends who believe in you and see power where you feel none at the moment.

2. Set a time limit for feeling low.
Don't rush yourself to feel better and put on a fake happy face. But don't wallow either.

Pick a time limit (a few days, a week perhaps) to fully feel all your feelings of frustration, disappointment, whatever is there.

Name your feelings and realize they are legitimate. Then get on with it.

3. Get into massive action.
Work your face off to get traction. Surprise yourself with how much you can get done when you let your feelings be the fuel that gets you past this rough patch.

Recognize that you have come this far in your human journey, and you will keep going because that's just how you roll.

Never, never, never, never give up.
